Advices on how to treat haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids are a common problem among the UK population, so there is no need to be embarrassed if you occasionally feel pain, itching and irritation caused by a haemorrhoid too. None the less, the symptoms are incredibly annoying. Here, you will find tips and tricks on how to relieve the annoying pain and itching in the anal area.

Haemorrhoids usually disappear by themselves over the course of a few weeks, but they often reappear later. They cause symptoms including pain, itching and irritation around the anus. This is not only incredibly annoying and tiring, it can also lead to embarrassing situations because you feel like scratching your bum all the time. Luckily, there is plenty of advice on how to relieve the symptoms and make the haemorrhoid disappear faster.

Warm baths

The warm water can minimise swelling and irritation around the anus. Some recommend that you add substances which help reduce the symptoms additionally. This includes apple cider vinegar or Epsom salt.

Witch-hazel

It is important to be careful in terms of what you apply to or around haemorrhoids, as the skin is very sensitive, and it could therefore easily become even more irritated or inflamed. Many people apply witch-hazel to the area to relieve the pain and itching. The natural witch-hazel is astringent, and it causes contraction of the skin. In addition, it also has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. By applying a little bit of witch-hazel to a piece of cotton and wiping the area gently, it might be possible to relieve the skin irritation.

Coconut oil

This oil naturally softens the skin, which might relieve the annoying pain and itching. It can reduce irritation and swelling in the area and thereby relieve symptoms.

Aloe Vera

This gel is often recommended – also in the event of haemorrhoids. The plant has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and it contributes to faster wound healing and relieves pain, itching and swelling caused by haemorrhoids. It is important to use a crème without any other active ingredients besides Aloe Vera, as these might make symptoms worse.

Freezer bags

By putting ice-filled freezer bags wrapped in a tea towel or icy cloths on the haemorrhoid, the pain and irritation can be relieved, and the swelling can be minimised. The area should however not be exposed to cold for an extended period of time, as this might damage the skin area. It is recommended to apply cold to the area for a maximum of 15 minutes per hour.

Non-prescription drugs

Last but not least, a range of products are available at the pharmacy, if the tips mentioned above do not relieve the symptoms sufficiently. Ointments or creams containing hydrocortisone or pain-relievers (NSAIDs) can relieve the pain quickly and temporarily.
